Q&A with Deborah Dupell

How would you describe your background?

I’ve never had any formal art schooling, but I was born with a paint brush in my hand, just not the same type I use now! My Dad was a self employed contractor who built many houses. We renovated more than I can remember. I was a designated painter and especially loved the detail work.

My grandmothers were both very influential in my life and were very creative. One was an accomplished rug braider and the other a fabulous seamstress. I just found out that she did sewing for the troops during World War II.I’ve attended many local workshops taught by some of our extremely talented artists and have learned so much from them.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

The last position I held before retirement was director of activities at a local nursing home. One of the activities I held was “art appreciation.” At first I thought my subjects had to endure my whims but soon found out that they were very knowledgeable and appreciative of my efforts.

After retirement I decided to pick up a paint brush in a different way. I had so much to learn, but dove in and by trial and error and the internet, kept going.

What would surprise people to learn about you?

I love animals of all kinds. I’ve had dogs, cats, pigs, horses, chickens and fish. Wish I had a goat!

How would you describe your art to someone who has never seen it?

I love to explore different mediums and am not loyal to any one. My current favorites are watercolors and acrylics. My favorite subject is botanicals. I lean more towards abstraction, trying my darnedest not to get caught up in details.

What achievements in the area of art are you proudest of?

My greatest achievements as an artist come not from awards or accolades but from a deep appreciation of the importance of art in our lives. I recently read an article and I quote, “Creativity is innate to us all. It’s a gift we all receive when we took our first breath.” —Karen Van Mierlo.

How would you describe your art process?

Chaotic!  I look for reference material, take photos and then use them to do my own thing.  Halfway through a painting I realize that the reference was just that. It pretty much looks nothing like the end result.

What is your usual studio/working day like?

I like to be inspired, I guess everyone wishes for that. When I start on a project I tend to get lost in the process and forget about the real world. I can work for hours on end and pray real life doesn’t catch up with me…. It usually does.

What is the most delightful part of your life outside of work?

Taking my dogs for a walk and forgetting my phone at home!
