Comfort & Joy Exhibit Opening

New exhibit at MAAA Art Gallery at Syd’s Opens December 7, 3-4:30PM

Keene’s oldest and largest furniture store fills a city block in Downtown Keene. As owner Jay Croteau (fourth generation) points out, “We are the only address on St. James Street.”

Inside are enormous rooms displaying mattresses plus multiple rooms of couches. There are rows and rows of cushy recliners and three very special rooms lined with beautiful art by local artists.

Syd’s ownership opened its arms to the Monadnock Area Artists Association (MAAA) many years ago and has recently recommitted to the “fine art and furniture” collaboration concept. Ruth Sterling, MAAA President explains, “In this setting, you can imagine your own dream space with furnishings and art—comfort, beauty and joy.”

The theme of the next Exhibit Opening at the MAAA Art Gallery at Syd’s is simply “Comfort & Joy.” Twenty-five-plus artists are showcasing recent works including local notables Mary Iselin, Jim Laurier, Kris Stewart and Jeanne Maguire Thieme. MAAA currently has about 125 member artists and each is invited to participate. The resulting show is an array ranging from renowned artists whose paintings fetch thousands of dollars to artists offering reproductions for less than $100.

The artists group is pulling out all the stops to make “Comfort & Joy” an art opening like nothing anyone has experienced before. Artists will be demonstrating in Syd’s big front windows. Free parking will be made possible by a parking attendant helping guests with the meters. And a very special visitor from the North Pole is anticipated. The first 100 people will leave with a beautiful gift from the artists. Harley Sterling is serving up adult and family-friendly refreshments.

Upon arrival, each guest will get a ballot to vote for “Best in Show,” so visitors are encouraged to peruse all three-plus rooms and experience all 85 artworks. Most artists’ work is linked by QR code to biographical web pages telling about their background, work and motivation. Many exhibitors will be on-hand to share insights about their art. Fourteen of the artists also exhibit at Keene’s Art in the Park, so people who love the Labor Day weekend event have a chance to find their favorite artists at the MAAA Art Gallery at Syd’s year-round.
