Q&A with Ed Kingsbury

How would you describe your background?

I am self-taught artist. My artistic journey began after a significant change in health. This transition happened when I was 22. I have been producing art ever since.  Early on in life I was more interested in athletic activities, but when my health changed I became more limited in physical activity. My artistic career has become a Vocation to serve God, which I am grateful for. I have been represented in many countries around the world and have enjoyed developing healthy friendships based on my artistic abilities.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

I noticed I wanted to be an artist when I experienced a great fulfilment during the process of creating.

What would surprise people to learn about you?

The most surprising part of my work is the imagery that is revealed while viewing my work.  Especially while praying.

How would you describe your art to someone who has never seen it?

The work has evolved over the years, but consistently it has been abstract.   I allow the viewer to experience on there own what they see.  I personally have witnessed certain things in my work, but I also get to see something new with other people’s interpretations.

What achievements in the area of art are you proudest of?

including:  showing in the Outsider Art Fair in NYC. It is the world’s largest self-taught art show, receiving the Ewing Award, I have shown in many countries around the world and I am in one of the top 20 galleries in Brooklyn, NY.

How would you describe your art process?

The process is a prayerful process. The works have no preconceptions. I use certain tools and have some idea of the direction but I have no specific outcome in mind. I relate it to the Mystery of Faith. I allow God and Jesus to show me the way to a completed piece.

What is your usual studio/working day like?

I try to participate in my artistic career 6 days a week. My current work is painting, digital art and drawing. I can spend several hours at a time working on a piece. Most of my work takes several days or weeks to complete.

What is the most delightful part of your life outside of work?

I enjoy friendships, pickleball and tennis.
